Kibale Forest National Park is situated deep in the heart of western Uganda lies one of Africa’s most captivating and biodiverse rainforests Kibale Forest National Park. Known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale is a lush paradise teeming with wildlife, vibrant birdlife, and a mesmerizing variety of tree species.
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking through an emerald jungle, hearing chimpanzees call from the treetops, and experiencing the thrill of tracking primates in their natural habitat, then Kibale Forest should top your Uganda safari list.
Kibale Forest National Park was officially established in 1993 to protect one of Uganda’s last remaining expanses of tropical rainforest. Covering about 795 square kilometers, it stretches across the districts of Kabarole, Kamwenge, and Kyenjojo, forming a vital ecological corridor that connects Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south.
This connection allows wildlife such as elephants and other large mammals to move freely between the two parks. The forest sits at altitudes ranging between 1,100 and 1,600 meters, giving it a mild, comfortable climate throughout the year.
Beyond its incredible scenery, Kibale is a biodiversity hotspot. It is home to more than 351 species of trees, some towering over 55 meters high, and several of them are centuries old. The forest canopy is thick and lush, creating a tranquil atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly.
What truly makes Kibale Forest National Park world-famous is its remarkable primate diversity. The park harbors 13 species of primates, the highest density found anywhere in East Africa.
Among these are the chimpanzees, the park’s star attraction. Kibale is home to approximately 1,500 wild chimpanzees, including a number of habituated groups that visitors can track. These chimps share about 98% of their DNA with humans, and observing their behavior up close is one of the most profound wildlife encounters you can experience.
In addition to chimpanzees, Kibale shelters:
But primates aren’t the only residents here. Kibale boasts over 70 species of mammals, including forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, duikers, and giant forest hogs. Though some of these are elusive and rarely seen, they add to the park’s vibrant ecosystem.
For bird lovers, Kibale is an unrivaled destination. The park is home to over 375 bird species, making it one of the best birding spots in Uganda. From colorful turacos to rare forest dwellers, birdwatchers will find endless delights here.
Some notable species include:
Whether you’re an experienced birder or a casual observer, the melodic symphony of bird calls in Kibale Forest is a magical experience that adds rhythm to your safari adventure.
Chimpanzee trekking is the highlight of any visit to Kibale Forest National Park. The activity begins early in the morning at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, where visitors are briefed by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers.
Once the trek begins, expect to spend 2 to 4 hours in the forest, following the sounds and trails left by these intelligent primates. The moment you spot a troop of chimpanzees swinging through the trees or grooming one another, you’ll realize the trek was worth every step.
You’re allowed to spend up to one hour with the chimpanzees once found — plenty of time to observe and photograph them while maintaining ethical distance.
For those seeking an even deeper experience, the park offers a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX), allowing visitors to follow a chimp group throughout the day.
Although chimpanzee trekking is the main draw, Kibale Forest offers much more. Visitors can take part in:
