First established in 1925, Volcanoes National Park was originally part of the larger Virunga National Park—then known as Albert Cook National Park—during the Belgian colonial period. Today, this once-unified park is divided into three parts: Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the expansive Virunga National Park in the DRC, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, which sits at the heart of this tri-border conservation area.
Volcanoes National Park is especially famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas and the dramatic volcanic peaks that define the landscape—Mt. Gahinga, Sabinyo, Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Muhabura.
Much of the park’s global recognition comes from the groundbreaking work of American primatologist Dian Fossey, who conducted her research here in the 1960s and 70s. Her legacy lives on through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Karisoke Research Center, which continues to play a vital role in gorilla conservation.
Today, the park is home to 20 habituated mountain gorilla families. Twelve of these families are available for daily gorilla trekking, while the other eight are monitored for research purposes. Trekking permits are required, and visitors must be at least 15 years old. Since permits are limited and in high demand, booking well in advance is highly recommended.

Visit the Tomb of Dian Fossey

However, it’s also the peak season, which means gorilla permits sell out quickly, and accommodation prices can be higher. To avoid last-minute stress, it’s a good idea to book both your permit and lodging well in advance.

While the trails can be muddier, you’ll benefit from fewer crowds and more affordable rates. No matter when you go, remember that weather in the mountains can be unpredictable—so be sure to pack a warm jacket and a rain poncho, just in case.
How to Get to Volcanoes National Park
By Road – Via Musanze
The most common and budget-friendly way to reach Volcanoes National Park is by road. If you’re traveling from Gisenyi, take the Gisenyi–Goma route, which is about 70 kilometers and typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes via the Nyabihu road.
Once you reach Musanze District, take a left onto Cyanika Uganda Road. After about 900 meters, make another left turn that leads you directly to Kinigi—a drive of roughly 11 kilometers. This road leads straight to the park headquarters. Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists along the way and stick to the 60 km/hr speed limit for safety.
By Air – Helicopter Flights
If you prefer a quicker and more scenic option, consider flying to the park by helicopter. Akagera Aviation offers scheduled daily flights from Kigali International Airport to Musanze. It’s a convenient way to cut down travel time and enjoy a stunning aerial view of Rwanda’s lush hills and volcanoes.
