Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most accessible and underrated safari destinations. Located in western Uganda, this compact park is just a four-hour drive from Kampala, making it an ideal getaway for travelers with limited time. Despite being Uganda’s smallest savanna park, it’s full of natural beauty and wildlife diversity.
Covering 371 square kilometers, the park sits in the districts of Mbarara, Kiruhura, and Isingiro. It’s the only national park in Uganda with an entire lake within its boundaries, which adds to its rich biodiversity and scenic appeal.
A Brief History
Originally established in 1933 as a controlled hunting area, Lake Mburo was later upgraded to a game reserve in 1963, and finally gazetted as a national park in 1983. Though modest in size, the park offers some of the most peaceful and rewarding wildlife experiences in the country.
Getting There
Lake Mburo National Park is located between Masaka and Mbarara, approximately 228 kilometers from Kampala. There are two main entry points into the park. Nshara Gate is located 13 kilometers past Lyantonde, while Sanga Gate is at Sanga Trading Centre, 27 kilometers beyond Lyantonde. Both routes are well signposted, and it takes about 20 minutes from either gate to reach Rwonyo, the park’s visitor hub.
What to See
Lake Mburo National Park features a beautiful mix of open and wooded savannas, wetlands, and lakes. These varied habitats support a wide range of wildlife. Visitors can expect to see zebras, impalas, elands, topis, buffaloes, warthogs, bushbucks, and waterbucks. Giraffes have also been reintroduced into the park, and predators like leopards, jackals, and hyenas are present, though harder to spot.

Nearby, you can also visit an observation point built as a wooden hide where you can quietly watch animals come to lick the salty soil—an incredible sight without disturbing the wildlife.

From horseback, you can enjoy close-up views of animals like elands, buffaloes, warthogs, topis, impalas, duikers, bushbucks, waterbucks, and zebras.
